Pilates
The late German fitness guru Joseph Pilates developed an exercise regime that's a loose cross between Nautilus and yoga. Using pulley-rigged exercise machines with names like the "Universal Reformer" and the "Cadillac," the Pilates method promises to strengthen and lengthen muscles and to align the body properly. "I own and use a Cadillac built by Pilates himself," says Jillian Hessel, a Pilates-style teacher for 17 years and owner of The Well-Tempered Workout*....
In a serene courtyard apartment, ex-ballerina Hessel, who has trained many of L.A.'s Pilates-style gurus, makes clients feel centered and comfortable, even during a tough workout. "I give them — and myself — core body knowledge," she says. "Then we begin to fix things, from the inside out."
*The studio is now closed; however, Jillian still offers
private and semi-private Pilates training.
