Maximize the Intensity of Mind-Body Workouts

Pilates, yoga, and tai chi stretch and relax you, but they can also raise your heart rate. This will help improve your fitness level while retaining the exercise form's original purpose, says Larry Althschuler, M.D., author of Balanced Healing: Combining Modern Medicine With Safe & Effective Alternative Therapies. Use these tips to intensify your mind-body workouts:

Pilates: Hold light hand weights during your mat workout to challenge your muscles to work harder, says Jillian Hessel, author of Pilates Basics. You can also add the Pilates "magic" circle [at left], a metal, rubber, or plastic ring with handles. For example, squeeze the circle between the ankles as you perform "The Hundred," a classic Pilates move in which you lie on your back, lift your legs and torso, and pulse your arms up and down at your sides "100" times. You'll notice your inner thighs must work harder to keep it in place.
