Pilates Barre Workout with Jillian Hessel*

The newest addition to Master Instructor Jillian Hessel's previous eight DVDs integrates her Pilates practice and her ballet expertise through the use of a weighted barre that can be adjusted to three configurations: propped vertically for balance, as a body bar and as light hand weights. She begins by demonstrating proper stance and form while drawing equal attention to your powerhouse and breath. With ballet-inspired music in the background, Jillian begins a dance warm-up in which she gracefully sways, moving her arms from side to side. The standing barre is lightly grasped for the first exercise segment so that she can teach classical ballet movements including pliés (deep knee bends) and tendus (stretches). The barre doubles as a body bar during the mat work segment. The last part guides us through a Spine Series and breath work performed with two small pieces of the bar as hand weights. Back extensions and a cool-down featuring Cat Stretch and more pliés conclude the session.
Bottom Line: Indulge your inner ballerina and strengthen your powerhouse with this elegant Pilates rendition.
